A few moments of reflection away from the collective hysteria over health care reform yesterday when President Obama presented Harvey Milk’s nephew the Medal of Freedom to honor the slain GLBT activist. Milk would have found it a big kick, especially in the company of Chita Rivera, another Freedom Medal awardee, since Harvey was part of the Broadway theater community before moving to SF. He also wouldn’t have passed up the public opportunity to advance gay civil rights in the US and to remind politicians that they must acknowledge gay America and do the right thing regarding equal rights marriage, the repeal of DADT and passage of the hate crimes bill that includes language that addresses sexual orientation. A crucial message from the President for gay America, when in presenting the medal he quoted Milk saying “Harvey said it best –Hope will never be silent.”
