note to Queen: Decode This!
Computer scientist John Graham-Cumming has gathered thousands of names on his petition seeking an apology from the British government for the way gay mathematician Alan Turing was treated by the Crown after WWII. He is also petitioning Queen Elizabeth to grant Turing a postumous knighthood.
Turing broke the Nazi enigma code and in doing so allowed the British government to intercept German intel and wartime maneuvers. He also devised the Turing test which calculated miscalculations of the first generation of computers
But after Turing admitted to his relationship with a man, he was prosecuted for “Gross Indecency” was publicly disgraced, lost his government security clearance and was subjected to chemical castration which included female hormones. He committed suicide two years later.
International gay-rights activist Peter Tatchell told the BBC. “With Turing’s death, Britain and the world lost one of its finest intellectual minds. A government apology and posthumous pardon are long overdue.”
